This was my second time visiting the James River in Virginia. It is a tidal fishery so it fluctuates around two feet every six hours or so. Back in 2022, I had a tackle warehouse event there and finished in the upper half. Most of the field at that time was making the long run to the Chickahominy River. The Chickahominy River was stocked with Florida Strain Largemouth Bass so they tend to be bigger. Also the Chickahominy River has lots of vegetation in the upper reaches. During practice I was catching most of my fish on the outside edges of pads and grass with a vibrating jig, also spending some time on Cypress trees and boat docks. Some of these areas I would pitch a Texas rigged finesse worm around. I would get bites doing this, but the bigger fish were reacting to the vibrating jig. I was throwing a black/blue chatterbait but much of the field was throwing different colors and catching them as well. I don’t think it was color dependent as much as being in the correct areas when the tide was right. When the tide was lower that would always be the better time for fish catches. It would force them out of the shallower water and to the edge of cover and you could fish more efficiently. Day one of the event I caught seven scoreable bass for 14-03. The second day was much tougher for me and I was only able to catch four scoreable bass for 7-02. This had a combined two day total of 21-5 and placed me 39th in my group. Most of my scoreable fish came from the chatterbait. For whatever reason, I lost lots of fish this event. Also the grass bite didn’t materialize in the tournament. I know I was in the correct areas due to my competition doing well around me, but for whatever reason it didn’t work out as well for me.
